Established more than 50 years ago, Club Italia Sporting Club is a community driven, not-for-profit organisation created to give the local Italian community a place to celebrate culture, family, friendship, and heritage. Founded in 1973 as the Italo-Australian Co-Operative Social Club Ltd., its mission was to preserve Italian traditions while fostering connection within the wider Australian community. With support from the Brimbank City Council, the Club secured land along Furlong Road in Sunshine, where it continues to operate today.
The Club began trading in 1981 in a modest hall featuring the original Members Bar. Growth soon followed: an open bocce field was added in 1983, and regular soccer activity began in 1986. Between 1985 and 1987, a major government grant enabled the construction of a commercial gym and a second members hall. During the early 1990s, members played a crucial role in rebuilding the Club and retiring debt, and by 1991/92, compensation from the construction of the Western Ring Road enabled the Club to purchase the Furlong Road property outright.
Further expansions continued through the late 1990s and 2000s, including the introduction of gaming, construction of a sealed car park, and a major redevelopment in 2006–2007 that delivered a new bistro, kitchen, lounge bar, entry, and gaming room. Another significant upgrade occurred in 2016–2017, adding a redesigned entry/reception area, pre-function foyer, and a purpose-built Function & Conference Centre.
Today, Club Italia stands as a vibrant cultural institution in Melbourne’s west, offering modern dining and function facilities, a premier bocce pavilion, and high-quality sporting grounds—welcoming members and visitors from all backgrounds.
The sporting arm of the Club has long been a cornerstone of community engagement of Brimbank Stallions FC, established in 1986 from Sunshine Park and Brimbank Soccer Club, it has grown into a thriving football program. Today, the club fields over 30 teams, incorporating both Senior and Juniors. Recent investment has facilitated the upgrade of the soccer playing fields together with improved lighting of the entire sporting complex. Brimbank Stallions FC continues to be a key part of both the sporting and social fabric of the Brimbank community.
