The Way We Were
In 1973 a group of local community members had a dream – a place where their Italian heritage and customs could be maintained and promoted for the benefit of the local Italian community, their families and the community in general.
The Italo-Australian Social Club of Sunshine was born, thanks to a group of foundation members. Social and cultural events took place at local school halls and a small club room was hired in Hampshire Road Sunshine.
The club grew in popularity and the members’ ambition was to have a place they could call there own.
The search was on for a location to build the dream, after months of hard work and searching, the club members were pleased to hear that the Sunshine City Council agreed to lease a parcel of land on Furlong Road, North Sunshine to the club.
Building the club premises began in earnest and it was a joyous time where everybody came to work and contribute to the construction of their dream.
Stage one of construction took 2 years to build and the first official function was held on 31st of December, 1981. The Italo-Australian Co-Operative Social Club Ltd was officially opened.
The People Then
Almost 40 years have passed since the dream was realized and many people have contributed in making the club what it is today. They are still remembered as by their deeds they are the reason the club exists. A list of past directors can be found here.
The Club Today
The club has come a long way from its humble beginnings. From leasehold to freehold; the Bocce Pavilion now holding competitions involving all of the various metropolitan clubs under the auspices of the VBF; a completely rejuvenated soccer ground, ground water bore, desalination plant and automated sprinklers and night lights, with three training grounds catering to all age groups under the banner of the Brimbank Stallions FC.
The function rooms, thanks to the great effort put in by our Social Activities Committee, are often filled to capacity with the great joy of everybody involved.
Bingo sessions are conducted regularly to the enjoyment of members and visitors alike, as well as a gaming venue with poker machines.
In the Members bar the life is still the same; the card players scream at each other in good fun, others are just happy to have a quiet drink at the bar.
